Who We Are and How We Serve
Calendar may be subject to change!
Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor is the Chair of the Committee on Education and Child Development and Alderwoman Angela Clay sits as Vice-Chair. The Committee on Education has jurisdiction over Chicago Public Schools and Chicago City Colleges to a certain extent. The Committee has no jurisdiction over Protocol, Policy, and Curriculum over CPS, CCC, and the Board of Education. Still, the committee holds a working relationship focused on building a path of transparency to serve the parents, students, and staff.
Ward 20 Schools
The 20th Ward is home to a diverse array of educational institutions, including public schools, charter schools, and early childhood education centers. To find a school near you, utilize the CPS School Locator. If you need further assistance or additional information, feel free to ask!
Recent Initiatives and Opportunities
Education Committee LA Visit
The Education Committee traveled to Los Angeles to study the city’s alternative school system. The purpose of the trip was to explore models similar to Chicago’s and identify strategies for developing more effective programs that support students attending alternative schools. Committee members learned about successful laws, initiatives, and engagement tactics used to keep students motivated and enrolled.

2nd Annual Returning Citizens Summit
Alderwoman Taylor and the 20th Ward team proudly participated in the Second Annual Returning Citizens Summit, which provided resources, connections, and opportunities for formerly incarcerated residents. The summit created space for dialogue, healing, and empowerment while ensuring that all returning citizens have a fair chance to rebuild their lives.
In partnership with community organizations and advocates, this event highlighted our shared commitment to equity, inclusion, and second chances. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to making this year’s summit a meaningful success.
10th Anniversary Dyett Hunger Strike
The 20th Ward joined community members, parents, and education advocates to honor the 10 year anniversary of the Dyett Hunger Strike. In 2015, parents, educators, and leaders led a 34 day protest that ultimately saved Dyett High School from closure and secured its reopening as a neighborhood arts school.
This anniversary was not only a celebration of their victory, but also a reminder of the power of community organizing and the importance of protecting equitable access to education. We thank the Dyett leaders and all who continue to fight for the future of our schools.

Back-to-School/Grand Opening
The 20th Ward proudly hosted our Back-to-School Bash and Grand Opening, blessing families with free food, school supplies, and community resources to kick off the school year. Our One Summer Chicago youth interns played a huge role helping with setup, welcoming neighbors, and keeping the event running smoothly.
Despite unexpected thunderstorms, our community still came together to laugh, connect, and enjoy the day. Thank you to all of our amazing sponsors and partners for helping us make this celebration possible!
Southside Youth Explosion (SSYE)
Held at Dyett High School, the Southside Youth Explosion was more than a celebration, it was a launchpad. Teens from across the South Side joined together for an afternoon of discovery, creativity, and connection. Youth took the lead in performances, panel discussions, and open mic sessions, while exploring resources around jobs, wellness, and advocacy. The event pushed young people to use their voices, tap into their talents, and imagine what’s possible for themselves and their communities.

Honoring Black Firefighters
In celebration of Black History Month, Alderwoman Taylor hosted a powerful event recognizing the legacy and service of Black firefighters across Chicago. Youth from local schools participated in learning sessions, asked thoughtful questions, and connected with living legends in the fire service. The event highlighted not just history, but future possibilities encouraging young people to explore public safety careers and honor those who paved the way.

2025 Summer Recap

The 20th Ward was proud to welcome over 6 summer interns through One Summer Chicago! These amazing youth showed up each day ready to learn, assist, and make an impact. Together, we planned two youth-led events—our Clean & Green and Back-to-School Summer Bash while also attending community events to show support and share resources. They even spent time at City Hall, observing committee meetings and gaining firsthand experience in civic engagement. Now, as summer wraps up, they’re preparing to head back to school with new skills and memories that will last a lifetime
